Chevrolet's done it again - the latest incarnation of the awesome Corvette ZR1 is now the fastest production car to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The time of just 7m19s is, to be honest, simply staggering. And how did the 2012 car achieve this time? The latest Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres - street-legal semi-slicks. These are the same as fitted to cars like the GT3.RS and the new GT2.RS, which last year Porsche claimed did a 7m18s lap (unfortunately, they've deigned not show us a video of this alleged feat).
The Corvette team have no such compunctions, so here it is - a very fast lap with Jim Mero:

"After the rumours, tweets and generally ill-informed gossip of last week Lexus Global have stepped up to the plate and delivered the in-car footage of Akira Iida's fantastic 7m14s lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The LFA has been testing hard at the Nordschleife for years, BTG first carried photos of the prototype car all the way back in 2007! The car driven here is on the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tyres and represents the final specification of the eye-wateringly pricey Lexus LFA 'Nürburgring Edition'"(c)http://bridgetogantry.com
It's a mildy-modded 3.0 M3. Nothing too crazy, just the right selection of bolt-on parts. Basically it's 3.0ltr M3 using the 3.2 sump and oil pump and a Group-N restrictor in the cylinder-head. Other choice mods other than the usual 'strip-it, cage-it' stuff include the KW 2-way adjustable suspenders and a Drexler LSD in the back.(c)btg
