'Our Guy in Latvia' - Channel 4, 14th December at 9 pm.
In this special programme Guy dedicates a rare week off work to a deeply personal crusade: to journey to the Baltics and uncover the truth about his Latvian grandfather, Walter Kidals, who died 9 years ago.
Exactly how did Guy's grandfather make it from the German occupied Latvia of World War 2 to post war England - and Hull, where Walter met and married Guy's grandmother? The exact details have always been unclear and so Guy decides to find out what really happened - uncovering an extraordinary life involving prisoner of war camps, daring escapes, and the constant threat of death and deportation.
Along the way he meets a colourful cast of characters who help shed more light on what Walter's life would have been like, from the genealogist who was once a welder in the Red Army, to the motorcycle collector who evaded the gulags by pretending his bike parts were fishing tackle, to the blind car mechanic who prepares a 30 year old Lada for Guy to drive around the country.
He visits the museum that was once a gunpowder factory in Latvia's capital Riga and finds documents relating to Walter's war record, and unearths 100 year old newspapers containing family stories in the national library. With the help of some historic hunting maps from an old Latvian ranger he then treks through forests to find the exact location his grandfather lived and went to school, before spending the night in a Soviet-style prison and experiencing the frightening realities of an authoritarian regime. At the end of his week away Guy will arrange a family reunion and meet his Latvian cousins for the very first time, a fascinating set of people ranging from an English teacher with a love of speed to the engineering enthusiast who built Latvia's first disco.
The trip won't just help paint a picture about his granddad's life, but it will also provide some answers about the origins of Guy's own unique personality.
