I had the hard decision of choosing an E36 M3 or an E46 M3 a couple of months back.
In the end, I plumped for the E36. What swung it for me was the E36 is rarer and a more thrilling driving experience. They have also now come away from the "Council Estate bling" image and started to get the modern classic tag. The E46 M3 is now at the stage where it's just starting to go into the hands of the wrong people (slammed, 20" rims etc) and where the bills start going up.
As with all M cars they can't be run on a shoestring if you want to run it to its full potential. I'd say you'd be spending £2-3k a year mantaining it, plus the inevitable subframe cracks...(c)pistonheads
Your right , ive owned both and found the e36 much more fun especially the early 3.0
Good E36s are beginning to come back into demand, now that a lot of the badly-modified ones have been driven to their graves and the image is improving
Have you seen the demand for LHD GTs now? They're not far off Alpina B8 asking prices
look at E34 prices overtaking the E39.
E36's have plateaued with good examples commanding better money. E46's still have a way to drop. I see no reason for the E9* not following the same profile.
The interesting thing is good E30 325i Sports are similar money to E46 330Ci Coupe.
E46 will drop below £5k in the next few years, easily. They are already being advertised every now and again under 5k with faults or with higher mileage and no faults around £5.5k.
E36 M3 are slightly rising in price for a really good one, but even so they are still swapping hands for under £5k.

Tur jau taa lieta,ka diez vai Edzulis meklee normaalu ikdienas auto,ja jau ir X5 un veel varbut kaads auto,taapeec vareeji necensties te stiligas bildites likt. Ja nopirktu E30,tad buutu stuck in the 80s?
Protams,ka nav jēga salīdzināt, ar modeļu maiņu tendence ir pārsvarā autiņiem palikt labākiem,ātrākiem,modernākiem utt.,bet ja reiz Tu apsver pat E30,tad var mierīgi E36,būs kaut kas pa vidam.Tikai jāskatās krāsa,vai kaut kas cits,kas atšķir,lai beigās neiskatās pēc kārtējās želejgalvas.
